Crocodile Rider
After all the dangerous things Steve Irwin (the
Crocodile Hunter) did during his life he ends up getting killed by a
stingray in what can only be considered a freak accident. When
people learn that I enjoy cycling the usually response is ‘Isn’t it
dangerous?’ or ‘Don’t the cars scare you?’. I’ve been riding for 20
years and have only had 2 encounters with cars. The first was
totally my fault. I was riding hard up a hill with my eyes fixated
on the front wheel. For some reason traffic had backed-up and I ran
into the back of a stopped car. I flipped over the bike and bounced
off the trunk of the car. My helmet cracked as it hit the
pavement. The impact smashed the taillight of the Honda and my
front wheel was ruined. Other than the embarrassment and a few scratches I
was not hurt.
The second accident happened when a car pulled
out in front of me. I was on a through street coming to an
intersection where the car was waiting at a stop sign. The driver
did not see me and pulled into the intersection. I was able to slow
before hitting the side of the car. No damage to car, bike or me.
So after 20 years and tens of thousands of
miles my answer is ‘no’. I’m not scared to ride my bike. And,
cycling is not risky and dangerous - at least not more so than
driving, swimming with stingrays or eating at Taco Bell. So get out
and go for a ride. That’ll be one less car to share the road with.
