A Cyclist's Best Friend
There are certain immutable rules in nature.
Rules that God hard wired into creation from the beginning of time.
For some unknown reason God programmed dogs to chase bikes.
For thousands of years this trait laid dormant just waiting for the
bicycle.
Then
it happened. The perfect storm. Dog and machine coming
together to form a new adversarial relationship.
Most cyclists have encountered this first hand
(foot?). Riding along peacefully when suddenly a menacing bark
signaling the attack breaks the silence. The heart jumps, the
adrenaline pumps, the muscles tighten. You whip your head
around desperately trying to make visual contact. There are
only a few seconds to assess the situation. How close is the
attacker? How big is it? What is its intent? A
strategy must be chosen and enacted. Fight or flight?
Is
it possible to ride away from the conflict? Is a defensive
counter move required? A water bottle spray. A loud
authoritative yell. Or maybe simply ignoring the beast hoping
this confident indifference breaks its will.
Your ability to choose the correct strategy will
determine the outcome. Be warned, if you choose the wrong
response be prepared to suffer the consequences. The picture
to the left is the result of choosing the 'ignore' option.
Happy Riding!
