Team Jerseys
Have you ever gone into a sporting goods store
and found jerseys of your favorite cyclists? Me neither. Lebron
James – yes. Brett Favre – of course. Peyton Manning – all sizes
in both home and away colors. But what about Lance Armstrong,
Alberto Contador or Cadel Evans? Forget it.

Why aren’t there any cycling jerseys? The
obvious answer is that cycling jerseys don’t sell. But why? Well,
there are far fewer cycling fans than for the other major sports.
Fair enough. Another reason is cyclists frequently change teams
which means the Lance Armstrong team Astana jersey you bought last
year has been replaced with this year’s Lance Armstrong team Radio
Shack jersey. And then there is the attitude among cyclists that
team jerseys should only be worn by the pros. The argument is that
the rider must earn the jersey. They say it is a sign of
disrespect. This is especially true for the yellow jersey and the
world champion rainbow jersey. And if you wear one of these jerseys
to an event other riders will deride you for it.
This has to stop. People who wear Peyton
Manning’s Indianapolis Colts jersey do so to honor and support the
man and the team. When cyclist purchase and wear team jerseys the
sponsors get greater exposure and more revenue resulting in longer,
more pr ofitable
sponsorships. Cycling benefits by increased sponsorship, greater
team loyalties and a larger fan base. This generates excitement and
grows our sport.
Wouldn’t it be great to walk into your local
sporting goods store and there, next to the Kobe Bryant Lakers
jerseys, are the Cadel Evans world championship jerseys??
